Welcome to the 2023 ENT Course.

Naturally, we are delighted to offer ENT teaching to Year 2 again. This year things are slightly different because there will be Virtual teaching and some limited face-to-face contact, but we are confident that our sessions will work well in these environments. The sessions have been restructured to allow for better interaction and multiple points for self-assessment through the week. We will also be holding virtual tutorials.

Week 208 looks at a specific subset of ENT study - that of ear disease and ENT emergencies. You won't cover all of the important emergencies here as some are covered in years 3 and 4 when you are on placement with ENT.

We will be reviewing the topics listed below in this week of study:

Monday:

Anatomy of the ear (also a pre-course anatomy session on the Friday prior)
Physiology of hearing
Conductive hearing loss
Sensorineural hearing loss
Vestibular physiology, vestibular nystagmus, vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis

Tuesday (ICM):

Tuning fork testing
Otoscopy
Otoscopic findings - what you see when you look in an ear

Wednesday:

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Ménière's disease
Otorrhoea (ear discharge)
Audiometry - an introduction to hearing tests
Vestibular history taking

Friday:

Tinnitus
Otitis media and its complications
Tutorials to discuss the cases of the week

During the week you will have ten case histories to follow. That sounds like a lot but almost all of the questions asked on the case studies will be answered as we go through the week so that, during the end-of-the-week tutorials, you will have all of the resources needed to be able to discuss the cases easily. During the Wednesday session, we will get you as a cohort to vote on which 3 cases you want us to cover in detail.
